If You Have to Leave

The unanimous advice from flooding experts goes like this: If you get word to evacuate, do it—now. And even if you haven’t heard any official warning, if you think you should evacuate, do it—now.

Your checklist for evacuation should go like this:

Start listening to your NOAA radio or one of the emergency apps described in Chapter 8. You’ll want to know about road closures, evacuation notices, boiled-water alerts, and where to go for higher-ground shelters.

Run around unplugging appliances. If you’re wet or in water, don’t touch the appliances themselves. You could be in for quite a shock.

Shut off the power to your house. You generally do that by shutting off the main circuit breaker on your main panel, usually above the smaller branch circuit breakers. Why? Well, suppose you forget. The power goes out in your neighborhood, and your house gets flooded. Later, when the power comes back on suddenly, your wet electrics can short out, spark, or start a fire.
